Arne Fogel with Nancy Harms

Arne appears frequently as a singer at the top jazz venues in the Twin Cities, and served as the opening act for Rosemary Clooney during her December 2001 appearance at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. He regularly hits the high-school-college-community meeting lecture circuit with songs and historical presentations of popular music and entertainment figures, was chosen from nationwide auditions to participate as a FELLOW of the 1998 EUGENE O'NEIL THEATER CENTER CABARET SYMPOSIUM in Waterford, Connecticut, and was a lecturer, performer, and conference consultant to the Hofstra University (Hempstead, New York) conference "BING! Crosby And American Culture" (2002). In 2003 Arne Fogel wrote, co-produced, and hosted a special program "Moments To Remember", presented in the 3M Auditorium of the MINNESOTA HISTORY CENTER.

Meterologist Frank Watson

Frank’s interest and work in weather began at an early age. At the age of 6 I assisted my father, Meteorologist Bruce Watson, on location in Colorado Springs, Colorado recording cloud development taking a snapshot of the clouds every 15 seconds using a 8mm video camera. Other projects as young youth include the proposed International airport in Ham Lake, MN in the 1970's, the Cooper-Nickel project in Ely, MN. As a teenager I accompanied my father across the state of Minnesota for his research to write and publish the 1975 Minnesota Weather Almanac, which is now known as the Minnesota Weatherguide. At age 16 I worked on a study for the University of Colorado into the effects of the Heat Island in big cities. My duties included the servicing and maintenance of a dozen thermographs located throughout the Twin City metro area. After high school graduation I continued my education at the University of Minnesota before transferring to the University of Wisconsin (Madison) where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology.

Sue Zelickson's Favorite White Castle Stuffing

10 White Castle hamburgers (remove pickles)
1 1/2 tsp ground sage or rosemary
3/4 tsp coarse ground black pepper
1 1/4 tsp ground thyme
1 1/2 cups diced celery
1/4 cup chicken broth

In a large mixing bowl, tear the burgers into pieces and add the seasonings and the diced celery. Toss well and add chicken broth. Place mixture in nine cup (2 1/2 quarts) casserole dish and bake covered for about one hour in a 350 degree oven. Uncover for last 20 minutes to get a crusty top...or you can place in cavity of turkey just before roasting. The recipe is enough for a 10 to 12 pound turkey. Allow one hamburger for each pound of turkey which is the equivalent of 3/4 cup of stuffing per pound. Leftovers are great the next day!

Former Minnesota Congressman Tim Penny

Former Minnesota Congressman Tim Penny is the President of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation. Tim Penny represented Southeastern Minnesota's First Congressional District from 1982 through 1994. He served on the U.S. House agriculture and veterans affairs committees and the Select Committee on Hunger, heading the foreign agriculture and hunger subcommittee. While in Congress, Penny founded and co-chaired the Democratic Budget Group and drafted deficit-cutting initiatives. He continues to work in the areas of federal budgeting, agricultural policy, trade issues, and rural development. He is a board member and policy chair of a budget watchdog group, the Concord Coalition, and is an advisory board member for a clean-campaign project, the Minnesota Compact. Barry Casselman holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Iowa. He founded and published his first newspaper in Minnesota at age 29. Spirituality accepts that the most important aspects of our world are hidden and beyond human comprehension, and it identifies this realm as composed of the spirit, the soul, and God. As a record producer to many famous recording artists over the years, I have become used to product review and criticism. Therefore I will now take a different approach to this whole process and pre-answer the predictable criticism of the ramblings found bound between these covers.

To those who suggest that this is really two different books, I gently respond, "No it isn't." I can't write about recollections of the places I have been without the foundational realities of where I am now. If I had written this book twenty years ago, the chapters sandwiched between my Beatles remembrances would have probably been about drugs, rock concerts, and wild parties. My hard years in the music business are the reasons why I have now found a soft place out of the mainstream.

Anne Paris, PhD, author of Standing at Water's Edge: Moving Past Fear, Blocks, and Pitfalls to Discover the Power of Creative Immersion (New World Library, 2008), is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has practiced psychotherapy for over 20 years, and has specialized in working with artists, trauma victims, couples, and parents. She is an adjunct professor at The Union Institute where she teaches classes, supervises and trains graduate psychology students, and participates in doctoral committees.

In addition, Dr. Paris co-founded the Cincinnati Center for Self Psychology, a training/educational institute for mental health professionals in the theory and practice of Self Psychology Theory. She served as President and Faculty member of CCSP and has given numerous presentations at professional conferences. She was trained and mentored in Self Psychology and Intersubjectivity Theory by internationally-known experts including Anna Ornstein, MD, Paul Ornstein, MD, Marion Tolpin, MD, and Doris Brothers, PhD. As such, she is professionally regarded as an expert in this approach to psychotherapy.

Dr. Paris is a member of The American Psychological Association, The Ohio Psychological Association, The International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology, and the Cincinnati Academy of Professional Psychologists. She has co-authored two academic journal articles, "The relationship of purpose in life to grief experiences in response to the death of a significant other" (Death Studies, 13, l989) and "The relationship of purpose in life to coping strategies and time since the death of a significant other" (Journal of Counseling and Development, 65, l987.) In addition, her doctoral dissertation is titled, "The creative process of restoring and transforming grandiosity and idealization: A trauma paradigm" (1993).

In Celebration of the Life of Don Boxmeyer

Columnist and Author Don Boxmeyer in a rebroadcast of our conversation from July of 2006, when he joined me to talk about his life of writing and his life after his life saving transplant surgery. Don will also talk about his book published by the Minnesota Historical Society A Knack for Knowing Things brings together in book form the best of his writing and demonstrates his talents as a master storyteller with plain-spoken, intimate prose.

After more than fifteen years of covering hard news, writing a newspaper column gave Boxmeyer the freedom to tell stories of more than just the politicians and the famous. “I realized that the interesting people and places nobody ever wrote about held more fascination for me, and for my readers, than all the governors, mayors, and city council members who never seemed to be much persuaded by my opinions anyhow. I began to collect hermits and hobos, bare-knuckled bar brawlers and bread-baking nuns, short order cooks and hockey coaches, drake mallards named Jake, and bridge tenders, band directors, bear hunters, and quiet old men who wept softly when we talked about the friends they’d left on the battlefield.”

Many of the places Boxmeyer writes about are gone now, except in the memories and hearts of the people who grew up there—Swede Hollow, the West Side Flats, Rondo Avenue, and the Upper Levee. These lost neighborhoods of St. Paul, ethnic enclaves on the West Side, the East Side, along the Mississippi River bank, and in the heart of the city, were razed over fifty years ago. Fortunately for us, Boxmeyer preserves their memory for posterity.

The final chapter in the book is about a special place in the heart of the author: Ashby—a real place, a town of less than 500 out in the rolling, open prairie land of west-central Minnesota. It is where Boxmeyer can be found each spring and each autumn, with his friends and with his sons, fishing, hunting, and just happily hanging out as living proof that everyone needs an Ashby.

Light for Therapy with Jana Sullivan

Recent scientific evidence has demonstrated the large potential for light therapy as an important adjunct to health care. There are two main sources of producing monochromatic light (single wavelength light) that is effective in the healing process, those being laser and light emitting diodes (LED). Lasers emit coherent light, while light emitting diodes produce non coherent light. An LED is a silicon microchip with various substances added, so when it is electrically stimulated, it releases a wavelength of color. The emitted light can spread out, unlike laser light. Our bodies have evolved to utilize incoherent sunlight as energy fuel that then transforms it coherent bio photons. Studies have shown that human cell tissue responds better to a single wavelength of light rather than light of multiple wavelengths. Monochromatic light therapy can produce a multitude of physiological changes in the body as demonstrated in scientific studies.

A native of Indiana, Jearlyn Steele relocated to Minnesota where she discovered her destiny. After much encouragement and community support, Jearlyn ventured out singing in churches, community centers and nightclubs. This eventually led her to theater where she has performed at such venues as Penumbra Theater of St. Paul, the Old Log Theater in Excelsior, The Historical State Theater in downtown Minneapolis, the famous Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, and the world renowned Guthrie Theater. Over a decade ago, Jearlyn, along with her siblings, The Steeles, began a successful run of the pop/gospel musical "Gospel At Colonus" which made its way to Broadway in 1988 and finally to Carnegie Hall. After Colonus, Jearlyn recorded many national and local commercials for companies such as Wilson Leather, Marshall Fields, Slumberland, Aveda, Target and many more. Her voice can be heard on various CD's for national artists like Prince, with whom she has toured, George Clinton and Mavis Staples.

Jearlyn Steele is a featured motivational singer at national award conferences for corporations such as Wells Fargo Bank, NRG, American Express Financial Services, and Carlson Wagonlit just to name a few. She has also been a frequent special guest on the prestigious Prairie Home Companion Show and has served as an entertainment reporter for various shows at KTCA Public Television. Among her honors are; Newsmaker of the Year 1998 by the MN Women's Press, The William (Billy) Griffin Award by the Hallie Q. Brown Center, Beautiful Strong Woman 2002, and Honorary Member of the Gustavus Library Association. Jearlyn has also written and produced radio commercials.

Currently, she host a radio show on 830 WCCO Radio where her talk show, Steele Talkin, can be heard every Sunday night from 7pm to 11pm in approximately thirty states nationwide and is streamed via WCCORadio.com.. Jearlyn's show covers everything from politics, to people in the news and from education to empowering her listeners.

A mother of two, Jearlyn has branched out to become more involved in creating ways to affect women and children�s lives in a positive way through music and public speaking. She has served on boards for the Ordway Circle of Stars and Chrysalis, a center for women.

Dr. Jerome Corsi received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Political Science in 1972. He has written many books and articles and is an expert on political violence and terrorism. In 1981, he received a Top Secret clearance from the Agency for International Development, where he assisted in providing anti-terrorism/hostage survival training to embassy personnel.

On March 17, 2005, Dr. Corsi helped found and launch the Iran Freedom Foundation, a non-profit educational and charitable organization established to educate the public about the Islamic Republic of Iran and to promote freedom in the region. The IFF is made up of American and Iranian scholars, professionals, philanthropists and human rights advocates who have joined together to support the rights of the Iranian people. Dr. Corsi is a principle founder of the IFF and will serve as a primary spokesperson for the organization.

Patty Peterson was born into the renowned musical Peterson Family which boasts mother Jeanne Arland Peterson, sister Linda Peterson, and three brothers, Billy Peterson, Ricky Peterson and Paul Peterson; all of whom are recording artists and involved in the international music scene. Patty began singing as a child at concerts and recording sessions, and today is an award winning jazz vocalist both live and in studio for national recording artists and commercials.

Jon Provost must have some canine in his DNA. He understands the relationship between dogs and people implicitly. Watching Jon interact with dogs has been a dearly loved pastime for generations of viewers, ever since his career-making role as Timmy in the Lassie TV series. Since his early acting days – gracing screens from not-quite-three – Jon has seen it all: the trials of child celebrity; the social strain; the sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll of the ‘60s on the Sunset Strip; and battles with near-crippling depression and dyslexia. For a while there, Timmy really was stuck down a well. But he got out – and these days Jon has a different story to tell.

2008 marks Jon’s 50th anniversary in the role of Timmy. He is celebrating with the release of his autobiography, Timmy’s in the Well and a multi-city tour. The legacy continues.

Blueberry Coffee Cake
(Compliements of our friend Dr. David Schultz)

1 Cup of margarine or butter, softened
1 ½ cups of sugar
2 eggs
1 cup no-fat sour cream
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
1 can (21 oz.) blueberry fruit filling or topping

Cake Topping:
½ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp. Cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine margarine or butter, sugar, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix until well-blended. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well-blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt; mix just until combined. Spread half of batter in the bottom of a greased 9” X 13” pan. Top with blueberry fruit filling and then remaining batter. For topping: In a small blowl, combine sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon; sprinkle over top of coffee cake. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool; cute into squares. Makes 20 servings. Prep time is about 25 minutes.
